Indian power system is facing high AT&C Losses, distribution network need improvement, wide demand – supply gap of energy etc. Additionally, it is also witnessing transitioning towards greener & sustainable future with greater penetration of renewable energy into the grid. With target of 500 GW of installed generation capacity from non-fossil fuels by 2030 set by Govt. of India, integration of new technologies to balance intermittency, variability & uncertainty of renewables are also mandatory to keep grid stable & secure. Smart grid technologies will help in this direction by providing improved observability, control, operational efficiency, reliability and consumer satisfaction. Large investment is expected for Smart Grid Applications in distribution, which will provide huge business prospects in coming years.
POWERGRID has identified some business areas where focused approach would be made to garner new business. Advanced Metering Infrastructure is one of them. POWERGRID is going to become service provider to different utilities for Advanced Metering comprising of Smart Meters, Communication System and Control Centre application on CAPEX as well as OPEX model.
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) is another prominent area where new investments shall be made. BESS are identified as the most comprehensive solution to address variability of renewables. CEA is expecting integration of about 27 GW, 108 GWh in to the grid by 2029-30. POWERGRID is keen to establish & operate these systems in future for various applications including Ancillary Services, Transmission System Optimization and Integration of Green Energy.
POWERGRID is also looking for solar energy generation opportunities. Already we have established more than 6 MW of rooftop solar PV systems for captive uses. Now we are exploring large scale Solar PV Plants in vacant land available in our premises.
